Gift Giving and Receiving Etiquette

It’s not the holidays until your teenager opens the ugly socks that grandma lovingly knitted for them and another fruitcake arrives from your great aunt. The problem is that you hate fruitcake and your teen is giving you the “no way am I putting these on look.”

And thus begins the season of awkward gift-giving.

The holidays present a veritable minefield of scenarios that don’t exactly promote peace on earth and goodwill toward men—and that includes giving and receiving. How much should you spend on a hostess gift? Do you need to buy presents for all of your friends’ kids? And how do you handle those thanks-but-no-thanks gifts from well-meaning relatives?

Discussions about money during the holidays should be open, candid and honest. If you anticipate hardship for someone, talk to them ahead of time. Let them know that you appreciate everything they’ve done in the past, but this year a card will be just fine.
Be truly and genuinely appreciative of lavish gifts, and reciprocate as best as you can in spirit, if not dollar for dollar. Gift giving is ultimately about the spirit or thought behind the present.
Only re-gift if you’re sure the recipient would love the item (which should be brand new and in its original packaging).
Someone gives you a present and you didn’t buy them anything! Unexpected gifts don’t have to be reciprocated, simply offer your thanks and send a heartfelt card later.
There are a lot of people who take care of you and yours every day. And even though some of them get tips every time you see them, most of them don’t. Remember cash is one gift that always says Happy Holidays and thanks for helping out this year.
A little help goes a long way when you’re first starting out. If you’re buying for a friend, family member, or even an employee who is struggling or hasn’t quite launched their career, a gift card or money to put toward what they need would be much appreciated.
Your D.I.Y. gift should not be a last-minute, cheap alternative. It should be something that you genuinely think the person will like or appreciate, and that you really want to invest the time in making
No matter who the present is going to, always make sure to include the receipt.
Don’t ask gift recipients what they want. Unless it’s a family member or close friend, asking what they want may make them feel obligated to get you something in return.
As for your bosses, a card or something small. After all, they’re aware of your pay grade and you don’t want to be seen as trying to influence them.
Finally, if you love giving your office mates presents, make sure to bring a gift for everyone—and keep it modest.
