Although based on fictional characters and situations, Broken Branch Falls is one of those thought provoking books that can be used to open the lines of communication with young adults about stereotypes, discrimination, and freedoms that we enjoy that others are not afforded. I found myself pondering how differently we view others than our ancestors did. Have we learned from them or do we judge them unfairly based on their looks, where they live, or the actions of others? As I read, I began cheering for these brave youngsters as they faced the adults in their lives to affect change that right and long over due. I was also reminded that doing the right thing is not always easy or popular.
