Best Image Sizes For Social Media Sharing

September 16, 2018 By Paula 5 Comments

Best Image Sizes For Sharing On Social Media

Creating social media images isn’t a one-size-fits-all task.

Images are the best way to grab your audience’s attention. So having the right images on your social media shares is vital. It’s not enough just to create one image and use it for all your social media sharing. Each social network requires different image sizes and each social media site crops and optimizes uploaded images differently. So it’s important to size and determine how to position product and wording in/on your images so that they present the best visual.

If time won’t allow you to can’t create images specifically for each social media, you need to have a minimum of two images (landscape and portrait) for every blog post. However, I recommend you have a minimum of three images for all of your posts. One of each: square, portrait, and landscape.

The most popular sizes that work for most social media are:

  • Landscape (horizontal): 1200 x 628 pixels (1.91:1 aspect ratio) or 1024 x 512 pixels (2:1 aspect ratio)
  • Portrait (vertical): 800 x 1200 pixels (1:2 aspect ratio)
  • Square 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1 aspect ratio)

For the best visually, eye-catching bang, images should be specific for the social media that you are posting on. Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn are all recommending 1200 x 628 pixels, which is 1.91:1 aspect ratio. You need to include this size image on every blog post!

Best Image Sizes For Sharing On Social Media - Optimal Facebook Image Size 1200 x 628

Facebook: 1200 x 628 pixels

  • Square photos, no matter what size you upload them, will be displayed as 476 x 476 pixels. If you upload an image that is less than 400 pixels, it will appear blurry.
  • Landscape (horizontal) photos will be scaled to 476 pixels wide, with the height adjusted accordingly.
  • Portrait (vertical) photos will be scaled to 476 pixels wide, with the height adjusted accordingly—but only to a maximum of 714 pixels.

There are two different layouts when you share a link on Facebook:

  • A smaller square image to the left of the link (text on the right). This requires a minimum of 154 square pixels on the feed and 116 square pixels for the page.
  • A larger image underneath a snippet of text. This requires an image with at least 470 x 246 for the feed and 484 x 252 for the page.

The recommended image size is 1200 x 628 pixels. Which, is almost the same as what they recommend you use when sharing an image on the site.

Best Image Sizes For Sharing On Social Media - Optimal Twitter Image Size 1200 x 675

Twitter: 1200 x 675 pixels

Images appear as a minimum of 440 x 220 pixels a 2:1 aspect ratio. Any ratio that is between 2:1 and 1:1 will work well. On a desktop, images appear as a minimum of 506 x 253 pixels, while 1200 x 675 pixels a 16:9 aspect ratio is the ideal image size to display your image fully on mobile (which also works great for desktop).

If you have an image that is smaller than 506 x 253 pixels, Twitter won’t stretch the image to fit. Instead, there will be whitespace.

Uploading 2-4 images:

  • When you upload four images, each image will be scaled to 379 pixels tall and cropped to 379 pixels wide, with an aspect ratio of 2:1 for all images (when displayed on mobile). They will all appear as square images with the first one larger than the other 3 on desktops.
  • If you’re uploading three images, each will be scaled to 337 pixels tall and cropped to 337 pixels wide, with an aspect ratio of 7:8 for the first (and largest) image, and 4:7 for the other two images (when displayed on mobile).
  • If you’re uploading two images, each will be scaled to 252 pixels tall and cropped to 252 pixels wide, with an aspect ratio of 7:8 for both images (when displayed on mobile).

Best Image Sizes For Sharing On Social Media - Best Instagram Image Size 1080 x 1080

Instagram 1080 x 1080 pixels

Instagram used to be all about the square photo but has now made room for both landscape and portrait photographs.

Square images are best at 1080 square pixels, although Instagram scales these down to 612 square pixels. The best size for landscape images is 1080 x 566 pixels and the optimum resolution for portrait images is 1080 x 1350 pixels. To be effective, ensure that photos maintain an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5.

For Instagram Stories, images have a 16:9 aspect ratio. The ideal resolution is 1080 x 1920 pixels, and the minimum resolution is 600 x 1067 pixels. Instagram has a maximum file size of 4MB for every photo uploaded to the platform.

Best Image Sizes For Sharing On Social Media

Pinterest 600 x 1260 pixels

Previously, on the feed and in boards, pins are limited to a width of 236 pixels with no height limit. Now, Pinterest has verified that Pins taller than 2.1 times their width will be cropped in the feed. My recommend 600 x 1260 pixels has this 1:2.1 aspect ratio and are some of the best performers for me. Pins taller than this will be seen in full when clicked.

Pinterest’s recommended image aspect ratio is 2:3 to 1.3:5 and their recommended sizes are 600 x 600, 600 x 900, and 600 x 1260. However, Pinterest says 600 x 900 pixels or any 2:3 size is optimal.

Best Image Sizes For Sharing On Social Media - Best Social Media Image Sizes For Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn

LinkedIn 1200 x 628 pixels

LinkedIn blog post link shares match Facebook’s, 1200 x 628 pixels. The image appears as 552 x 368 pixels. LinkedIn does crop the sides of landscape images to fit the 368-pixel height and it crops the bottom of the image exceeding the 552-pixel height if you upload a portrait or square image. You can still view the whole image when you click on it. NEW! The optimal image size for individual profile updates posts is 1800 x 1200 pixels for both updates with links and without links to web pages.

Find Sweet Southern Savings on Snapchat

If you have an image that isn’t one of these standard sizes, you can use this handy calculator tool to find the aspect ratio of your image.

Much of my image work is done in PSP, however, I use several different free online image editors for quick sizing, editing, and optimization tasks. Do you have a favorite free online image editor? My go-to because I’ve used it for several years and it is the one that I am most familiar with is Web Resizer. Recently, I was introduced to two awesome sites, Canva and Canvas Prints. I love the speed at which images upload to both of these sites. These are the most simplified photo editors that you will come across. Thanks to all the features, another favorite of mine is LunaPic. With this free easy to use online photo editor you can make art instantly with their filters and effects. Give one or all of them a try to help you step up your sharing game.

Selfhosted.co Moved My Blog To Self-Hosted WordPress For FREE! Let Them Move Yours For Free, Too!

July 1, 2017 By Paula Leave a Comment

Wordpress Themes Logo

SELF-HOSTED WORDPRESS PUTS YOUR BLOG ON STEROIDS!

Do you have a blog on WordPress.com, Blogger.com, Wix, or another blogging platform and want to take full control over your blog? Then,  it’s time to look at moving to Self-Hosted WordPress.

Selfhosted.co Moved My Blog To Self-Hosted WordPress For FREE! Let Them Move Yours For Free, Too!

For those confused about what WordPress actually is:

It’s important that you know the difference between WordPress.com (The business) and WordPress (The blog software). WordPress is a 100% free blogging platform. I’m not talking about the blog you can create for free on WordPress.com, I mean the actual platform itself. WordPress, the platform software, has the distinct honor of being a highly configurable Content Management System (CMS). It was originally designed to address the needs of bloggers but eventually evolved into a platform that accommodates plugins and design widgets – adding not only aesthetic value, but also functionality.

Offering WordPress, the blog software, alone for free wouldn’t make them any money. The way they make money (after all they are in business to make money), is through WordPress.com – Where they have made it convenient and easy for you to setup a blog for free, on their domain and hosting server. They make money with all those “premium” features they offer in their Business plan ($299 per year!) Even when you’re using just free plan, they still make money because they put advertisements on your blog posts.

What many don’t realize is that all those premium features aren’t actually limited in the software itself. They have just limited them on your blog. When you move to Self-hosted WordPress you are really just taking WordPress (the software) with all those premium features and installing it on your own host. This means you get full access to all the functionalities of WordPress (the software), that you would otherwise have to pay for to use on WordPress.com (the business).

Selfhosted.co

Until June 2017, my blog had been hosted with Weebly since 2013 when I started with their free platform on their hosting server. Frustrated with the lack on navigation features, being able to be found by Google, and slow load times had wanted to move to a new host for about two years. However, doing it on my own was as terrifying to me as running through the mall naked. Selfhosted.co to the rescue!

I took advantage of our FREE Blog Migration Service and they move all my content. All four years of posts, pages, and content were moved to my new host (I chose to FastComet at only $47.40 a year). They even set setup everything for me just like I requested – theme, widgets, plugins, layout, everything was ready for me to start blogging. All that was left for me to do was shout about how easy it was!

I decided that it was also time to bring my blog into focus and rebrand at the same time. With the blink of an eye and wave of Selfhosted’s magic wand PaulaMS’ Giveaways, Reviews, & Freebies became Sweet Southern Savings and all that was left for me to do was shout about how easy it was! I have been on my new host, using the WordPress platform for about two weeks now. I absolutely love it and how easy moving was. Looking back, I just wish that I made the move sooner.

☠ Tomoson Hall of Shame

December 30, 2016 By Paula Leave a Comment

Tomoson Hall of Shame

If you are like me having unfinished items really bothers you. Well, on Tomoson there were two campaigns in which the company never sent the product. These two remain on my page and everytime Tomoson does an update they show as past due. I have asked them several times to remove me from these two campains. Since I have not had any luck I am making this post with the code needed to clear them myself. I’ll call this post the Tomoson Hall of Shame.

How to Create an Account and Upload Pictures to Instagram WITHOUT a smartphone!

August 25, 2014 By Paula Leave a Comment

How to Create an Account and Upload Pictures to Instagram WITHOUT a smartphone!

Problem – I don’t have a smartphone.
Solution – find a workaround.

I’ve had an Instagram account for a while now. I got my sister who has a smartphone to create an account for me to use for giveaway entries. Recently I found a need to be able to add pictures to my account.

While searching for answers as to how to do this I realized that I’m not alone. A lot of people are looking for a way to be able to use Instagram without a smartphone. There is some good and a lot of bad information out there. I’ve tried to sort out the bad and share some helpful tips on how to create an account and add images to it.

Here is how you can create an Instagram Account and/or Add Images without an iPhone or Android device

Create An Account:
Easiest:
Do it on a friends phone

  1.  Just launch the app and log out of your friends account (Go to Settings > Scroll down and tap Log Out).
  2. Once you have logged out of your friend’s account, you will be able to see the “Register” button. Create an account.

Use an Emulator:
Here are two that I know of. I’m sure there are more.

  • BlueStacks App Player
  • DuOS-M App Player

I used BlueStacks to create an account for my boyfriend.

  1. First, download and install on your Mac or PC. After install, Bluestacks will start on its own, and then restart itself.
  2. Next, search for the Instagram app: Click “Top 25 Apps,” then scroll down until you see Instagram. Click + launch Instagram
  3. Install: Choose the first result in the left-most column.
  4. Now launch Instagram (Click the “My Apps” icon) and follow the steps to register a new Instagram account.

It was simple once I realized the Check Mark in the top right corner was the enter button.
It’s Sideways! Fix it – Click the settings icon, then “Change App Size.” Now, toggle Instagram to “tablet.
DuOS-M is not compatible with my system. So I can not offer any information about it.

Add Pictures to your Instagram account from your PC:

  • Gramblr
  • BlueStacks App Player
  • DuOS-M App Player

You can use the emulator that you used to create your account. I didn’t like Bluestacks because it makes you download or pay to keep using it. But it’s fine for creating an account. I have now started using Gramblr to add pictures.

Although Gramblr is Free and Easy to Use, you cannot upload and post photos that aren’t cropped and resized. Gramblr only accepts square photos in JPG or JPEG format that are 650 x 650 pixels. Webresizer makes this easy to do.

Adding A Picture Using Gramblr:

  • After Downloading, start the program, and log-in to your Instagram account.
  • Next, Choose the photo you want to add and click upload. Make sure that it’s the correct size first! Just wait, Gramblr doesn’t have anything to signal that it’s working

  • Add the Caption you want and Click “Save Caption” Just wait Gramblr doesn’t have anything to signal that it’s working
  • When you see the image below it’s done and your image is on your Instagram account. Congratulations! You Did It!

If you choose to continue using Bluestacks after using it to create your Instagram account. You’re going to want to change Instagram settings to look at the file system, not just use the camera so that you can use it to add pictures to your account.

Here’s How:

Click on settings (the 3 dots)
On the Next Screen, click on Camera Settings
Now, Uncheck “Use Instagram’s Advanced Camera.”

Instagram’s quest to remain an exclusively mobile app:
They are now penalizing users of third-party apps, such as Gramblr, Bluestacks, DuOS-M. Instagram is now disabling hashtags on accounts that have used third party apps in the past, sometimes even for just one photo.  Simply put, your photos will no longer be searchable by hashtag.

So, who should continue to use these third party apps?

  • Individuals who do not have access to a smartphone
  • Who don’t care about being searchable by hashtag
  • Those who aren’t interested in accumulating followers
