Can you believe it’s MONDAY already and time once again to reflect on the past week?! In the recent weeks we have looked at milestones, how to stay motivated, the smart use of free foods, some tactics for dining out, surviving the holidays while dieting, the benefits of a 5% weight lossdiabetes, the importance of exercise, starting an exercise routine, and beginner exercises. Mother’s Day was the start of our grilling season and the first of a long list of summer grilling holidays. Last week, I continued with my new exercise routine and spent time with my sweetheart who is a Marine Vet. Since it is Memorial Day, I would like to say thank you to him, my father, who is retired Air Force, and all my readers who have or are serving in our armed forces for their service to our country. Thank you, for ensuring our safety and making the freedoms that we all enjoy in this great country possible. I appreciate each and every one of you.

Memorial  Day

Originally called Decoration Day, from the early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags, Memorial Day is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers.

We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.

In 1873, New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a legal holiday. By the late 1800s, many more cities and communities observed Memorial Day, and several states had declared it a legal holiday. After World War I, it became an occasion for honoring those who died in all of America’s wars and was then more widely established as a national holiday throughout the United States. In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act and established that Memorial Day was to be commemorated on the last Monday of May. 

HONOR. REMEMBER. NEVER FORGET.

This Memorial Day as we enjoy the warm weather, cookouts, and all sorts of outdoor activities we need to remember that today isn’t about beer, brats, and an extra day off from work. The heart of a holiday is to honor the more than 1.3 million Americans who have died in our nation’s wars. These men and women took an oath to the Constitution and served our country and each other with honor, dignity and courage. Giving ALL for their country. Join me as I reflect on the sacrifice these members of our armed forces have given so that we can enjoy our freedom and prosperity.

How my freestyle weight loss week went:

With appointments four out of five days this week it was another week of appointments and waiting rooms. With only two days of doing any exercises, my new exercise routine took a back seat this week. I did get some walking in as it’s over a half mile from were we park to the check-in for physical therapy. The new kitten is also keeping me busy. She thinks we are her human teething rings. Who would have thought that such tiny teeth could hurt so much!

Saturday was spent taking my neighbor to dialysis and working on this blog. Sunday was spent at home hanging out with Marcus. The weekend always seems to go by so fast. I got on the scale for my weekly weigh-in early Sunday. When I stepped on, I saw that this week I had not lost nor gained any weight. Not surprising as I’ve been lax and not doing as I know I should. Time to make time for ME and get back on track. I know I can do this as I’ve done it before. It just seems so much harder to lose weight this time. Until next week… Remember to stay positive and keep looking forward.

    A lot of our family members have served our country! My dad was in the Navy in the Korean War. My husband was in the “Vietnam Conflict.” Our grandson is in the Marines and stationed in Australia right now. I just want to say something about that stupid conflict where a lot of GOOD men and women lost their limps, lives, and more! They still don’t get the respect they deserve!! My husband was in Nam in the late sixties. A few men & women who were drafted, ran to Canada and who knows where else. My husband who wasn’t even 18 years old yet, manned up to his country’s call of duty! He was in the Army
    paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division.
    He jumped into and fought in the never ending raining swamps – monsoon weather! Those men and women were constantly cold and wet! My husband caught Malaria, was emotionally traumatized by killing people that he didn’t even have “a beef” with, and then years later got a letter from our wonderful government to go get checked out to see if he was infected with Hepatitis C! He tested positive and so did I!! Also when our soldiers came back to the states, they didn’t get a heroes welcome! They were greeted with protesters and hippies, etc. Sorry I just wanted to vent! Nothing has changed and now our Vets benefits are constantly getting cut!! This is not what they were promised if they served their country! This is just like what the politicians/thrives/liars have done to our Social Security and Medicare benefits! CUT! CUT! CUT! & STEAL! STEAL! STEAL!
    Taking our money and using it without our permission and NOT paying it back/with interest! They should practice what they preach! A bunch of hypocrites!! I am thankful to all of our service people for their service and sacrifices!! You deserve a lot better and more than what you’re getting! God Bless you all ❤️ ??

    I used to belong to Weight Watchers, but the meetings have gotten too expensive for me. Thanks for posting!

      I am doing their online program which is much more affordable. Mom did the online program and T.O.P.S. meetings. Also, a lot less expensive.

    Beautiful post, Happy Memorial Day to you too. I am about in the middle of the images you have there. I haven’t been loosing weight, but when I start walking or exercising I lose one pound and the next day or so it goes back up. It’s super frustrating.

    I am at a point on my weight loss journey where I feel I am doing well. I have lost 20lbs. since February. I have 5 kids so that definitely keeps me motivated and helps with my exercise as well. We aren’t really on any diet or lifestyle program. We just watch what we eat and choose healthy choices. We also make sure we get plenty of exercise.
    I had no idea you could dedicate a poppy. I am going to do that. We always remember on Memorial Day all those that made a sacrifice.

    It sure is difficult sometimes to take out time to exercise in busy schedule but it so much important. I am trying myself to get in a habit of 5 days exercise a week.

    Thank you to your sweetie and father for the brave sacrifices they have made. Today, I am saying thanks to my father and his three brothers, who all served in the Navy. Hope you had a relaxing day.
