INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR LANCE ERLICK
Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Writing has been in my blood since I was eleven. My head has always been full of story ideas, challenging circumstances, and plot twists. Most weren’t worth pursuing, but the process kept challenging me to write and improve my writing skills.
What would you most like readers to know about you?
While I have not lived through what Synthia Cross or my other characters have, my journey has been filled with challenges. What has gotten me through them has been to try to be honest with myself about where I land, what options I have, and then to do whatever I can to work my way to a better place. One of the darker and yet brighter periods in my life was when I found myself out of work (from a brand new job) with two young children, a non-working spouse at that time, and a brand new mortgage when jobs weren’t plentiful. After an hour of grieving, I picked myself up and engaged in a marathon push to put our lives back together. Interestingly enough, I’d worried about losing my job before this point and never again afterwards.
How has your background influenced your writing?
I went to 10 schools over an 8-year period (grades 3-10), as a result of my family moving. I lived 2.5 years in boarding schools, which required living away from home. A year of that was in a French boarding school where I spoke no French and no one around me spoke English. In addition, as part of my changing social situations, I was surrounded by strong women. All of this required that I learn to adapt and make the best of whatever situation I landed in. Perhaps this is why I find it easy to jump into my characters circumstances.
How much of yourself is hidden in the characters in Reborn?
Android Chronicles is a tale about an android with the download of a human mind striving to be free to reach her potential. It brings back to me a moment when I was young, living in a military boarding school. One day I gazed out the window, wondering what it would be like to be out there instead of locked inside. From this, I can identify with part of Synthia’s struggle to break free from her situation.
Do you have a saying or motto for your life and/or as a writer?
If you know what you want and where you want to go, you increase the likelihood of getting there.
