My review of the X431 Cresetter OBDII Scanner:

I just had the privilege to experiment with a new vehicle scanner that we received from Cresetter, a company that is new to us but has quickly impressed with the quality of its products. The Launch X431 is a compact hand held unit that is a specialized automotive diagnostic tool for resetting automotive service lights. After unboxing this sweet little gadget I couldn’t wait to power it on via the 16-pin data link connector (DLC). I needed to reset the service lamp on our minivan, which gave me the opportunity to try out the OBDII Scanner.

Start up is very simple, I just needed to plug the X431 Cresetter OBDII Scanner’s DLC into my vehicle’s DLC and turn the ignition to on. The colored LCD screen lit up, displaying the interface with three options – Select Brand, Tool Setup, and Help. Selecting Brand, I found our vehicles make and pressed the green enter button to confirm my selection. Then a message of “Communicating, Please wait” appeared on the screen. After communicating for just a few seconds is displayed “Engine oil life current value (20%).” I repeated the steps and by pressing after it showed my current value, I was able to enter a new value of 100% and then press the button to reset. Then, the “reset successful” message appeared and the light went out. Kabam! No more irritating flashing service light.

This little scanner did what it claimed. Although the options are very limited in comparison to my other scanner’s abilities. However, it is a great entry level scanner and overall this unit is designed very well, with a color LCD screen that is easy to see. The quality of the materials and components used in manufacturing seem to be top quality, also.

This Auto Diagnostic Scanner is used for Reading and Clearing Vehicle Trouble Codes. It can be user setup to any of three languages, English / French / Spanish, so all the information can be read and understood in your favorite language.

Recently we received a really cool gadget from a company called Topdon. A great vehicle scanner that plugs into the access port under the dash near the steering column. After unboxing, I inspected the unit for quality in manufacturing, design, and parts. Finding all very satisfactory Marcus was eager to test this device on our 2003 Chevy Venture van with has several lights illuminated. This handheld unit comes with a USB cord for plugging into a computer for software updates and improvements, an impact resistant case to protect it when not in use. The Topdon OBDCAN Plus does not have a power button as this device activates and the menu pops up automatically when plugged into the 16-pin testing port.

Scanning is simple, I simply turned on the ignition and selected “Auto Scan.” This little unit then automatically scanned our vehicles ECM and took mere seconds to scan. We found out that our vehicle had a multi-cylinder misfire and a bad AC sensor. WOW, Impressive! As a DIY kinda guy, Marcus does all the maintenance and repairs on our vehicles but has never had access to this type of esoteric data. Marcus had just changed the spark plugs and wires due to an obvious misfire and the engine ran very well expressing a very slight misfire, the subtlety of which was very hard to detect. After replacing both sensors that the codes indicated he ran the diagnostics again to confirm that the issue was resolved. Without this scanner, Marcus would have been able to quickly diagnose and correct the problem.

Clearing the codes is also very simple, he simply activated the erase code function and pressed delete. When complete we noticed that the annoying “Check Engine Light” was no longer lit. Now he can thoroughly diagnose and fix identified issues within the ECM, as well as, delete annoying service lights on dashboards. With this Topdon scanner, you will be able to do this also, just remember that with great power comes great responsibility. This device comes with everything except an operation manual which I believe was an oversight in packaging this particular unit. We did find some operational guidance on YouTube.
