WWFreestyle Zero Point Foods - Zero Never Looked So Good

0️⃣ What Are Weight Watchers’ Freestyle Zero Point Foods and How Do I Use Them To Lose Weight? Read This Post To Find Out!

Weight Watchers Get Healthy Freestyle Journey – Week 5

A Look At Zero Point Foods

It’s time once again to reflect on my week. As I finished up my fourth full week of the Weight Watcher’s program, I took a few moments to see why I had not lost as much as I had hoped for so this week. After some soul searching I believe that I may have been overusing the “FREE” foods. Both mom and my sister lost weight this week. I am so proud of them!

Zero Point Foods

I want to take a few minutes to explain what Zero Point Foods are for those who are not familiar with them. For many years one of the main features of the Weight Watchers program has been their point system. All foods are given a points value and your goal is to stay within your daily points allowance. Now with the Weight Watchers Freestyle program, many foods such as lean proteins, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu, nonfat plain yogurt, veggies, and fruit are called Zero Point Foods. The foods on this list form the foundation of a healthy eating pattern, so you don’t need to weigh, measure, or track any of them. They are a great way to stay within your daily points budget.

Zero Point Vegetables – You can enjoy most non-starchy vegetables for zero points on the plan. You will have to count any oil or butter the vegetables are cooked with. This includes fresh, frozen, and canned vegetables as long as they aren’t packed with any additional oil, sugars, or fats. There are a few vegetables that are not zero points including potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, parsnips, cassava, mushy peas, yuca, and olives.

Zero Point Fruits –  Almost all fruits are zero points but they should be eaten in moderation since they can quickly add up and slow your weight loss. This includes fresh fruit as well as frozen, canned, or jarred fruit as long as it doesn’t have added sugar. However, avocados, plantains, and any fruit that is made into a drink or smoothie are not zero point foods. This is because a smoothie contains much more fruit than you would normally eat in one sitting. For example, you would not normally eat several whole fruits, a cup berries, and some pineapple in one sitting but is common to have all this and more in a large smoothie.

Zero Point Condiments, Flavor Enhancers, and Spices – The WWFreestyle program also includes as zero foods spices, low calorie, low sugar condiments, and many of the things that we use to enhance the flavor of foods. Some of them are vinegars, broth, fresh and dried spices and rubs, mustard, hot sauce, capers, and salsa. Note: These are zero points when used in small amounts but if you are using more in a recipe you may have to count the points.

Be Smart About Zero Point Foods – These zero points foods are one of the things that I love the most about the Weight Watchers program but they can lead to slower weight loss if they are overused. This is especially true when it comes to lean proteins, beans and legumes, eggs, and fruit. If you find your weight loss is slowing or plateauing, it may be a good idea to look at how you are using zero point foods. You may find that you are overusing these foods. I went to Aldi’s so we had lots of fresh fruit in the house. I believe this is why my weight loss was lower than I wanted it to be last week as I found myself snacking on them all week. Even if it is zero point food, eating too much is not good. For example, even though eggs and grapes are zero points, it still isn’t a good idea to have several boiled eggs or a huge portion of grapes for a snack. Instead, opt for a single egg and a small handful of grapes. Everything in moderation! If your weight loss is progressing as you would like. If it is – then just keep doing what you are doing!

How my freestyle weight loss week went:

Much of this week was spent on the laptop working. So much work to do that I had to remind myself to get up and move. With my father having trouble with his vision, this has also been an emotionally stressful week. I had hoped that I had a grip on my emotional eating but found myself looking for those comfort foods that in the past I had found solace in. This time, however, I stepped back for a moment and evaluated my choices. Instead, of eating I grabbed a cup of green tea or went outside and tidied up the yard.

Milestone achieved on 3/4/2018
High 5%
Losing 5% of your weight is a big deal! It can improve your mood, give you better sleep, and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Woot!

Even with having a weak moment, I swear that Milky Way was calling my name, the week ended with 56 points left in my bank unused. With all the free foods that I love eating, I had many daily points left at the end of the day a several times this week. No matter how I good or bad did this week or this month this journey has given me a chance to get to know myself. Best of all, I’ve just begun. There’s a lot more to discover about myself. I’m just glad that I don’t have to travel alone. But the trip to scale was one that I would have to do on my own. So on Sunday, I found my way to the scale for my weekly weigh-in. Nervous as usual, I stepped on the scale to see that I had lost 2.4 pounds this week! See you can have your cake and eat it, too. You just can’t eat all of it. Averaging 2.9 lbs per week, I have lost a total of 14.4 pounds since starting the Freestyle program. Until next week… Remember to stay positive and keep looking forward.

My First Month Complete!

As I finish up my fourth full week of the Weight Watcher’s program, it’s time once again to reflect on my week. My family was awesome and supportive all week. As I revealed last week, my Mom has joined my sister and me on our get healthy fitness journey. She has lost weight each week since joining and reduced her diabetes medication significantly. I am so proud of her! The men in our lives have also been making changes. Partly because we have and they are being supportive. And partly because we do much of the shopping and cooking and they have no choice unless they want to learn how to cook. I am so happy that this journey is helping our whole family become healthier. This has truly been a blessing!

Kool & The Gang – Celebration

How my freestyle weight loss week went:

Much of this week was spent on the go. With having to be away from home all day, I had to eat out several times this week. Some days I was busy until well past dinner, so it was lunch and dinner at restaurants. Our selection of places to eat isn’t very good in our area, mostly pizza and burger places. So I found myself at Subway again this week. My favorite was their 6″ Oven Roasted Chicken Sub on wheat without cheese or condiments at just 6 SmartPoints. I even splurged one day and got a bag of Sun Chips to have with my sub. The other days I packed our meals so that we could have something that would be filling and nutritious while we were busy going from one appointment to the next. I was proud that I was able to make a much better choice for eating out than my poor old one which would have been a meal of a high-fat, high-caloric burger and fries.

The week ended with 54 points left in my bank unused. Now that I’ve completed my first month of the program my new way of thinking and decision making are becoming easier and more enjoyable. Once again, with all the free foods that I love eating, I had more than four daily points left at the end of the day a few times this week. One of them was even a day that I ate out!

No matter how I thought I did this week, it was the moment of truth. How would being out of my usual routine and the safety of home affect my weight? Did I keep my eye on my fitness goal? Had I really made good choices? I found my way to the scale for my weekly weigh-in. Nervously, I stepped on the scale and was relieved to see that I had lost 1.8 pounds this week! Not a huge number I was hoping for two pounds, but I am pleased with my progress. I have lost a total of 12 pounds since starting the Freestyle program. Until next week… Remember to stay positive and keep looking forward.

Juicy tomatoes, salty olives, spicy pepperoncini peppers, crisp red onion, crunchy croutons and salty parmesan cheese tossed with romaine lettuce and topped with that delicious Olive Garden Italian Dressing.
Who loves Olive Garden Salad? I sure do!

Olive Garden’s Salad Dressing

You don’t need to leave home to enjoy the taste of Olive Garden’s famous salad dressing. This is my old adaption of the copycat recipe that was developed by Food Network Kitchens.

INGREDIENTS
1⁄4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 tablespoons White Wine or Cider Vinegar
3 tablespoons Miracle Whip
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoons grated parmesan or romano cheese
1⁄4 teaspoon garlic salt or 1 garlic clove, minced
1⁄2 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
1⁄2 teaspoon dried parsley
1 – 2 tablespoon water

Optional: Add a small amount of pepperoncini juice to the dressing.

DIRECTIONS
Combine all the dressing ingredients and 1 to 2 tablespoons water in a blender or food processor; puree until smooth. Serves 4.

In a large salad serving bowl, toss together a traditional lettuce mix, red onion slices, black olives, pepperoncini, tomatoes, and croutons.

Lighter Version of Olive Garden’s Salad Dressing

This delicious copycat Olive Garden Salad Dressing recipe uses Greek yogurt and honey instead of mayonnaise and sugar. It is very close in taste to Olive Garden’s recipe but healthier. This light version is only 1 SmartPoint per 2 tablespoon serving!

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup Plain Unsweetened Greek Yogurt
1/3 cup White Wine or Cider Vinegar
1 tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive or Avocado Oil
3 tablespoons Raw Unfiltered Honey
1/2 cup Fat-Free Parmesan or Romano Cheese finely grated
1 large Clove Garlic Minced
1 teaspoon Dried Italian Seasoning
1 teaspoon Dried Parsley
1 tablespoon Fresh Lemon Juice

DIRECTIONS
Combine all the dressing ingredients in a blender or food processor; puree until smooth. Makes one pint (32 tablespoons).

In a large salad serving bowl, toss together a traditional lettuce mix, red onion slices, black olives, pepperoncini, tomatoes, and croutons.

How my freestyle weight loss week went:

My first big hurdle this week came when we were out all day and had to eat away from home. We had missed lunch as my dentist appointment took over three hours. In the past, this would have meant a fast high-fat, high-caloric meal. Instead of our usual trip through the drive-thru, we stopped at Subway and got subs for an early dinner.

Another week of strategizing and exploring new recipes. Salads have become a staple side dish and main entree for us. To change them up, I’ve been playing with homemade salad dressings. One of my favorite makeovers is below. The week ended with 58 points left in my bank unused. It is getting easier each week to adapt to my new way of thinking and decision making. I have found with all the free foods on the Freestyle program that some days I had more than four daily points left at the end of the day.

Once again, it was the moment of truth. This was my first weigh in during my monthly visitor. Usually, I gain at least five pounds during this time. How would it my affect my weight this time? I found my way to the scale for my weekly weigh-in. Nervously, I stepped on the scale and was relieved to see that I had lost half a pound this week! Not a huge number but one that I am pleased with. Until next week… Remember to stay positive and keep looking forward.

Weight Watchers’ Freestyle 2 SmartPoints Chili Recipe

Weight Watchers Get Healthy Freestyle Journey – Week 2

2 SmartPoints Chili Recipe

As I finish up my second full week of the Weight Watcher’s program it’s time once again to reflect on my week. My family was awesome and supportive all week. Although, Marcus wasn’t too impressed when I handed him what he called a “Super Model” breakfast. Truth be told, I wanted a bagel but only half of one so I gave him my other half and two cut up strawberries on a plate. In my defense, they were big strawberries. I also went and put a whole bagel in the toaster for him.

My Game Day Chili Recipe

Look no further for the ultimate, easy chili recipe. At just 2 SmartPoints per serving this delicious chili is not only perfect for game day but also busy weeknights and weekends.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound fresh (99% lean) ground turkey
  • 1 (46- ounce) can tomato juice
  • 1 (15-ounce) can red kidney or pinto beans, drained
  • 1 medium-large onion, chopped
  • 1 large container mushrooms, sliced or (6 – 8 ounce) can or jar sliced mushrooms, drained and squeezed to remove excess water
  • 1/8 – 1/4 cup chili powder (use less for milder chili)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (use less for milder chili)
  • 2 teaspoons oil (reduce or omit if you are using 95% lean or lower ground meat)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Add oil to a large skillet, brown the ground meat, fresh mushrooms, and onions
  2. Drain off the fat
  3. Put the mixture and the remaining ingredients in a 6-quart pot
  4. Cover the pot and let the chili simmer for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, stirring every 15 minutes. You can also cook in a slow cooker on low for 3 to 4 hours. Makes 6 servings.

Variation:

Add chopped green peppers to the skillet or a can of diced tomatoes to the pot.
I like to top mine with a bit of green onion and fat-free shredded cheese.

How my freestyle weight loss week went:

My first big hurdle this week came on weigh in day as it was also Super Bowl Sunday. My big game snacks consisted of celery sticks and hummus, a parfait made from unsweetened greek yogurt sweetened with a few drops of NuStevia Alcohol-Free Vanilla and strawberries, and a bowl of game day chili (recipe below) at dinnertime.

The week started with our neighbor bringing over a batch of cookies. I  must confess that I used most of my SmartPoints that I had banked to eat a few of. Then, I left the rest of the calorie bombs for Marcus to enjoy. Midweek found me faced with reviewing four flavors of apple cider at 5 points per KCUP! The temptation keep coming as Saturday it was chocolate covered cherry coffee.  No calories in the coffee but the candies that we planned to use in the photographs of the coffee sure did. Did you know that chocolate covered cherries have 4 SmartPoints EACH?! The rest of my week was spent continuing to adapt to my new way of thinking and decision making. Another week of strategizing and exploring new recipes.

Once again, it was the moment of truth. How much damage had I done? I found my way to the scale for my weekly weigh-in. Nervously, I stepped on the scale and was relieved to see that I had lost 2 pounds this week! Until next week… Remember to stay positive and keep looking forward.

Where are you?

Where are you on your journey? Do you like your Chili spicy or mild? Do you enjoy cornbread, crackers, or something else with yours? What is your favorite add-in for chili? I would love if you would let me know.

My First Week On New The Weight Watchers’ Freestyle Program

Weight Watchers Get Healthy Freestyle Journey – Week 1

My First Week On The Program

As I finish up my first full week of the Weight Watcher’s program I must say that it was a week of ups and downs. I started this journey with my eyes wide open as this is my second trip. I was successful before so somewhere deep down I know that I can do it again. However, I didn’t realize how much it would mean to have the support and encouragement of those around me once again. A phone call to check and see how my day went, accepting the changes to recipes without hesitation, and the other things that my family has done this week to encourage and support me. I’ve known for several years that I had lost my way and that I needed to get back to being healthier. Afterall, I do have a lot of knowledge as to how I should be eating and exercising. I just wasn’t doing it! It’s time to get myself back to living. Afterall, I’ve got some wonderful people in my life and I want to be around to enjoy my grandchildren.

How my freestyle weight loss week went:

My first big hurdle came before I had told everyone that I was going back to Weight Watchers. We went to visit my parents and lunchtime came. Mom offered us lunch and that’s when I told her. She fixed their lunch as planned which was meatloaf sandwiches and chips. Then, made me a salad with every veggie she could find in her fridge. I got a small piece of the meatloaf to eat with my salad. When lunch was done I didn’t feel deprived. I actually felt good. That same day I went grocery shopping and spent 80 percent of my budget on fresh fruits and vegetables. The other 20 percent went to healthy meats.

Midweek found me faced with Chinese on my plate. However, by using riced cauliflower instead of rice and a healthy switch from battering and frying my chicken to using chicken breast and simply adding it to my veggies, I enjoyed my meal of stir fry and stayed within my points.

My week was spent adapting to my new way of thinking and decision making. A week of strategizing and exploring the changes that have been made to the program since I had done it more than ten years ago.

Once a month I take my aunt to do her monthly shopping. So when Friday came it was my next big challenge. A day of shopping, bill paying, and eating lunch out at a restaurant. I had all my weekly points left and had even banked a few. So I was prepared. However, with just making a few changes to my normal selection I not only had a delicious lunch but I went to bed Friday night without touching those extra points and 1 more point in my bank for Super Bowl Sunday. Which thanks to all the “free foods” on the program was going to be as satisfying as the game was sure to be exciting. However, before the game and party started it was the moment of truth. I found my way to the scale for my first weigh-in since starting my journey a week and a half ago. Nervously, I stepped on the scale and was shocked to see that I had lost 7.8 pounds! It’s game time! Until next week… Remember to stay positive and keep looking forward.
