The most noticeable difference between the two is that commercial carpet favors durability, while residential carpets are typically designed to offer more comfort. Commercial-grade carpeting will last much longer than residential carpet when subjected to the same heavy use.

Residential carpets favoring comfort have greater pile height and often have a thick underpad, thus increasing the carpet’s lush feeling and sound absorption. Since comfort isn’t a priority in commercial spaces, these carpets are constructed with durability in mind. The main focus is for the flooring to last. They need to be able to stand up to heavy and regular foot traffic. Even homes with pets and small children won’t track in nearly the same amount of dirt and debris as the hundreds of people who walk through a busy commercial space.

Carpet fabric can be made from a variety of materials like nylon, polyester, olefin, wool, cotton, or sisal. Acrylic carpeting used to be the standard but it isn’t anymore because it wore out too easily. Now, most commercial carpet is nylon, which makes it easy to clean. In some cases, it is also treated for stain resistance. Many homeowners consider wool to be the ultimate fiber for residential carpets as it’s durable and stain-resistant. According to the DIY Network, there are two main types of carpet construction, loop, and cut pile. Which, are defined by the way the carpet fibers are attached to their backing. Loop pile means the fibers are bent into little loops. And, as the name suggests cut pile carpets cut the yarn tips so there aren’t any loops. You need to be aware of the density and weight of a carpet as this significantly affects its feel and durability. Fabrics that weigh more often have more strands of yarn per square yard, indicating higher quality.

Commercial carpets are often made for very large spaces where there’s a greater demand for darker carpet colors and thus a wider variety of darker colors and patterns will be available. Carpeting made your home will be smaller means there’ll be a wider range of lighter colored carpets. This is because lighter colors reflect light better and make a space feel more open.

While there is still a wider variety of styles and color options for residential carpets than commercial ones, there are more of a selection becoming available as the trend to mimic the comfort of home in business spaces grows.

With the new choices in color and pattern that are available some homeowners are finding that commercial carpets are a better fit for them. Since commercial carpeting can take more wear and tear, at a fraction of the cost, they can be an excellent choice for a room like a basement that leads out to your backyard. In a situation like this commercial carpet can be a cost-effective option. An excellent commercial carpet for the home is a nylon frieze, also known as twist pile.

Both commercial and residential carpets require regular vacuuming and cleaning. The more dirt your carpet accumulates before being cleaned, the quicker the carpet will show signs of wear and tear. Residential carpets should be deep cleaned once a year while commercial ones should be done each quarter.
