Woodworking: How to Get Started Carving Wood Inexpensively

August 14, 2019 By Paula 65 Comments

Woodworking: How to Get Started Carving Wood Inexpensively - Want to start creating but don't have a lot of money to spend on tools? Whether you're making a wooden spoon, wood spirits, creating unique spindles, or adorning furniture carving wood is all about patience, tools, and timing. #WoodCarving #DIY #Dremel #Woodworking

Getting Started with Wood Carving

Want to start creating but don’t have a lot of money to spend on tools? Whether you’re making a wooden spoon, wood spirits, creating unique spindles, or adorning furniture carving wood is all about patience, tools, and timing. From choosing the right wood, to picking the right tools and accessories this guide is all about helping you get started woodcarving without breaking the bank.

First, you will need a place to work. Carving wood is very messy, loud, and requires lots of lighting.

Your Basic Woodcarving Tools

There’s really not a lot that you’ll need to get started; a carving knife, an ax, and a sharpening stone.

You’ll want to invest in a good carving knife. These knives intended for whittling tend to have fixed blades and longer handles. If you already have one, a good pocket knife will do, too. However, there are some inexpensive wood carving knives for less than $10 that are excellent and of good workmanship. If you don’t already have one you will also want to get a small ax that you can grip easily. And, to keep your blades sharp you will need a good ceramic sharpening stone. Tip: When sharpening, angle the blade between 10-20 degrees and swipe it back and forth across the sharpening stone.

To protect your hands, eyes, and lungs you will also need a glove, a pair of safety glasses, and a dust mask. Always wear a glove on the hand that isn’t holding the carving knife. A leather hide work glove works best. It will not only protect your hands, but they’ll be more resistant to damage than other types of gloves and they will last longer. Marcus wears gloves both hands to avoid blisters and splinters in the hand holding the wood, too.

You will also need to wear a good pair of safety glasses to prevent wood chips from getting in your eyes when you’re sawing, chopping, or using a rotary tool. Don’t forget to protect your lungs with a dust mask. It will make sure you’re not inhaling the dust created by carving, cutting, sanding or polishing.

Want to start creating but don't have a lot of money to spend on tools? Whether you're making a wooden spoon, wood spirits, creating unique spindles, or adorning furniture carving wood is all about patience, tools, and timing. #WoodCarving #DIY #Dremel #Woodworking

Your Rotary Tool and Accessories

A rotary tool is a great tool for carving. We love the TECCPO 5-Speed Variable Speed Rotary Tool, with its flexible shaft. This makes maneuvering much easier than holding the bigger heavier tool in your hand. It is also in the $25 – 30 price range making it more affordable than a Dremel. To get the most out of your tool you will want to get some Tungsten Carbide bits. These will last longer than the high-speed steel bits that come with your kit. Carving bits go by names such as burs, cutters, carvers, stones, and discs. Two sets that we have purchased on eBay are a 10-piece Tungsten Carbide Burr Bit Set and  6-piece 40mm Tungsten Carbide Burr Bit Rotary Cutter Files.

Having a variety of high-speed cutters will make shaping, hollowing, grooving, slotting, and making tapered holes easier. The rotary tool we purchased also came with some finishing accessories to get us started. If you choose a rotary tool that does not include finishing tools or if you’ve used them up, you will need a sanding drum and sanding bands. There are all types of accessories that you can get for your rotary tool, just make sure that they will fit your tool. Most rotary tools take accessories that have a 1/8″ or 3mm shank. For more guidance on what each type of bit does check out this power carving bit guide from Woodcarving Illustrated.

The Best Woods For Carving

When you’re just starting out, it’s better to choose softwoods like birch, limewood, pine, willow, spruce, cedar, redwood, basswood, or horse chestnut. They are easier to carve. Once you’re more experienced, you can start using hardwoods such as elm, butternut, aspen, birch burl, cherrywood, maple, apple, pear, olive, mahogany, or walnut. Although harder to carve, these all contain beautiful patterns and colors that will add new elements to your carvings. The wood you use will also vary based on what’s available in your area and the project you are working on.

Get the cleanest wood possible. If you’re getting your wood from a craft store, chances are you won’t find many growth rings or knots in it. However, if you’re getting it from a lumberyard or using fallen wood that is found in your backyard or local forest you are likely to find these obstacles. When you are a beginner woodcarver it can be difficult to carve around these natural formations. Save the tricky stuff for later and remember practice makes perfect.

Now that you have an idea of what you need, I bet you’re probably excited to start your first woodcarving project.

Whether you're making a wooden spoon, wood spirits, creating unique spindles, or adorning furniture carving wood is all about patience, tools, and timing. #WoodCarving #DIY #Dremel #Woodworking

Preparing the Wood

It’s time to start chopping, so put your safety gear on and grab your ax. To make a controlled split straight down the middle, very carefully wedge the ax into the top of your wood, keep your fingers out of the way. Lift the log, leaving the ax inside it, gently knock it against a hard surface. If you have a piece of wood that is much larger than your project, repeat until you have a piece of wood that is near the size you want.

After you have split your wood, clean up the surface with the ax and remove the dark core. Using your ax, carefully chop away some wood until the dark line in the middle is gone. Now it’s time to remove the bark. Using your ax start in the middle and chop downwards, angling the ax to the outside to help the bark peel away easier. Turn the wood over and repeat. Remove any small bits of bark with your knife.

Once you start, never leave your unfinished piece of wood lying around in the air, because it will dry out. To help your piece to stay moist and avoid cracking. Put it in a plastic bag filled with wood chips and a few drops of water, and leave the bag open. You can safely leave it for a few days or even up to a week, but make sure you check and turn it every day.

Getting Started

Practice drawing your design first. Though your piece might change as you carve, it’s important to practice perfecting its basic shape before you start whittling away. On your piece of wood, trace out your design lightly with a pencil. With experience, Marcus has found that tracing over his design with a Sharpie helps keep it visible when using the cutting bits. Staying within the lines of your drawing will help keep you on track and focused when the ax and carving knife comes out.

There will be times while carving that you will want to speed things up; especially the drying process. But take things slowly and enjoy each step of the process. Carving wood is not a hobby you can rush, and when you hold your finished piece you’ll be glad you took your time.

#WoodCarving #DIY #Dremel #WoodworkingThis spoon was the first item he carved.

Warning! Wood carving can be addicting. Once the carving bug bites you, you may be tempted to spend a lot of money on tools. Your carving skills won’t improve by purchasing more tools nor more expensive tools. The only way to improve is practice, practice, and more practice.

In the few short months that he has been carving, Marcus has created all the pieces in the images above. We’d love to know what you think of the things he’s made. What would you like to know about woodcarving? Which project would you enjoy learning more about?

Love saving money? You’ve got to try these MONEY SAVING TIPS!

June 19, 2018 By Paula 16 Comments

Love Saving Money? Don’t Miss this MUST READ! MONEY SAVING TIPS Post - It can be difficult to figure out ways to save money and how to best use your savings. Some of these suggestions take just a few minutes, while others require a bit of regular effort. #Save #Saving #SavingMoney #Money #Tips #SaveMoney #MoneySavingTips

CHECK OUT THESE GREAT MONEY SAVING TIPS

Your FUTURE starts TODAY!

No matter where you are on your financial journey, you need to know that it’s possible for anyone to turn their financial life around. Sometimes all it takes is that first step in the right direction to get things moving. But, as with most things, sometimes the hardest thing about saving money is just getting started. It can be difficult to figure out ways to save money and how to best use your savings. Some of these suggestions take just a few minutes, while others require a bit of regular effort. Still, they’re all doable.

  • Record your expenses – figure out how much you spend.
  • Make a budget – be sure to include an amount to save,
  • Choose something to save for –  down payment on a house, a vacation, a car, education, retirement, etc
  • Make saving automatic – keep your savings account at a different bank than your checking account
  • Be smarter with shopping – take advantage of apps, sign up for loyalty programs, join a warehouse club and buy in bulk, clip coupons, plan your purchases around sales and daily deals
  • Write a list before you go shopping and stick to it – Only shop when you have a list because when you’re without one, you typically end up making impulse buys and unplanned purchases.
  • Quit using credit cards – Stop carrying your credit cards and remove your credit card numbers from your online accounts – It’s easy to spend when you have your credit card in your wallet or card information stored in an account – just pull it out or click and buy.
  • Consider a flexible spending account – they can save you money on health care costs not covered by insurance, including co-pays and deductibles.
  • Create a visual reminder of your debt – make a giant progress bar that starts with the amount of debt you have and ends with zero. Each time you pay down a little bit, fill in a little more of that progress bar.
  • Check your progress – make a “money date” with yourself every week.
  • Online Shopping – When shopping online, check out price-comparison websites or use browser plugins to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Just because something is advertised as being discounted doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good deal. Read this post to learn where to find the best online deals.
  • Money Education – The sooner kids learn about how to manage and save money, the better off they will be. So start their financial independence education early.
  • How to Splurge – When you’ve got your eye on a splurge item, jot it down as a goal and increase the amount you set aside for savings. Check back in a few months. Still, want it? Great. If not, even better! Buyer’s remorse averted and a healthier savings account.
  • Holiday Shopping – Do your holiday shopping right after the holiday. Many of us already use this technique for Christmas, but it works for every holiday. Just wait until about two days after a holiday, then go out shopping for items you need that are themed for that day. The discounts are tremendous, and you can just put this stuff in the closet until next year.
  • Grocery Shopping – There are lots of ways to save when it comes to feeding your family. Check out my post to find out how to save on groceries with the tips and tricks that I put together.
  • 10 Second Rule – Whenever you pick up an item and add it to your cart or to take it to the checkout, stop for 10 seconds and ask yourself why you’re buying it and whether you actually need it or not. If you can’t find a good answer, put the item back. This can be a great way to keep from making impulse buys.
  • Strategize – Sit down and plot out which debts you’re going to pay off and in what order. Simply having a plan goes a long way toward putting that plan into action, and paying off debts.
  • DIY & Homemade Gifts – To save money and still give generously, create your own homemade gifts. You can make food mixes, candles, bath scrubs, fresh-baked bread or cookies, soap, and all kinds of other things at home quite easily and inexpensively. Include a personal handwritten note to complete the gift.

Use These Tips and Tricks To Save Money On Groceries

Tips And Tricks To Save Money On Groceries

Regardless of whether you’re feeding just yourself or a whole family, you probably find that groceries take a big bite out of your paycheck. Grocery stores are expensive. Have you ever gone in for a couple of items and left with an empty wallet? I have! Since we all have to eat, there’s really no way to completely avoid these stores. After all, buying groceries and making homemade meals is still the cheapest, smartest way to get you and your family fed. One of the easiest ways to save money on groceries is to stop wasting money at the grocery store. To help you stop throwing money away, I’ve put together some tricks that I use to avoid over-spending at the supermarket.

  1. Use your store’s circular to plan your meals. If you don’t get the weekly sales flyer delivered with your newspaper, you can find most store circulars online. Browse the weekly sales and then build your weekly meal plan based on what’s on sale.
  2. Take the time to make a grocery list. In addition to helping you to not forget needed items, having a list can make shopping more time and cost efficient. Learn the layout of the store, organize your list accordingly, and avoid the aisles that you don’t have to go down. The more aisles you walk down, the more likely you are to add things to your shopping basket that you didn’t intend to buy. Shoppers who visited most or all aisles in a store ended up with 68% of the items in their cart being unplanned purchases.
  3. Stay away from the inner aisles. Grocery stores are strategically designed with essential ingredients, such as dairy and produce, on opposite sides of the store. Try to skip the middle aisles of the store and shop the perimeter for the healthiest items and the best value.
  4. Stay away from the prepared foods. Don’t buy the pre-made foods, no matter how good they look. Buy the ingredients and make it for a fraction of the price at home.
  5. Convenience costs you extra Items like grated cheese, pre-cut fruit, and pre-washed salad are going to cost you money. With a less expensive block of cheese and a cheap box grater, you can save money by grating your own.

Tips and Tricks To Save Money On Groceries Clip Grocery Coupons

  6. Use coupons, loyalty cards, and rebate apps. Coupons can save you some serious cash. In addition to the weekly coupons found in newspaper inserts, printable coupons are a great source of savings. Sites such as Coupons.com, RedPlum, and SmartSource.com are great places to find printable coupons. Rebate apps have offers for the things you already buy. Plus, you don’t have to clip a single coupon to get savings. Three that you need to have in your arsenal are Ibotta, Checkout 51, and MobiSave.  Sign up for their loyalty programs and get familiar with the promotions they run and what rewards they offer.
  7. Bring your own music. Studies show that stores play music with a slower beat to encourage you to move more slowly through the aisles. That slower pace can lead you to buy 29% more.  Create your own mix of upbeat songs to listen to while shopping.
  8. Skip the spice mixes. Fancy spice mixes, marinades, and rubs can easily set you back several bucks. You can easily make your own spice mix, marinade, and rubs with seasonings you most likely already have on hand. The main ingredient in most of them is salt.
  9. Reconsider buying bottled water. Often it is nothing more than filtered tap water. Consider purchasing a water filter pitcher or a water filter that snaps right onto your faucet. It’s just as healthy as what’s in the bottle without the expense or plastic waste. The average cost of a 16 oz. bottle of water is about a dollar. With it recommended that you drink four of them per a day, it adds up to $120 dollars a month spent on something you can get from a faucet.
  10. Don’t be tempted by brand names. Store generic brands are often name-brand products with their own labels on it. Just check the ingredients to be sure you’re getting the same product.

Tips and Tricks To Save Money On Groceries Grocery List

  11. Look up and look down. The eye-level shelves are stocked the priciest items. When shopping, look at the higher and lower shelves for cheaper items.
  12. Remember to get and use rain checks. A rain check is a voucher for items that are out of stock. It allows you to purchase the product at the sale price at a later date. Rain checks often entitle you to the sale price for the 30-45 days. Also, save your unused coupons as many stores will accept coupons that were valid on the date a rain check was issued.
  13. Don’t go to the store hungry. If you buy your groceries when hungry, you’ll purchase more than you need. Also, research shows that to hungry shoppers high-calorie foods may be more tempting than usual. Shopping with the munchies can put a dent in your bank account and leave you with a pile of unwanted purchases.
  14. Take inventory. Know what’s in your fridge, pantry, and freezer before you shop. Take inventory once a month to get a sense of what items you will need and what you can skip buying at full price.
  15. Don’t waste food. According to the National Resources Defense Council, 40% of the food produced in the United States never gets eaten. Americans typically throw out about 25% of the groceries they buy. To prevent your food from turning into wasted money, sort through your fridge and pantry about once a week for items that are about to expire and place those in a designated space so that you remember to eat them before they go bad.

Tips and Tricks To Save Money On Groceries Green Grocery Cart with Groceries

  16. Leave children at home. Just the thought of grocery shopping with children is enough to make some parents shudder. It isn’t easy to say no when children and sometimes spouses want to buy food items that you don’t need.
  17. Try to eat with the seasons. Eating seasonally helps you eat healthier, more nutritious food while saving money. Out-of-season produce has to travel far to reach your store, a cost which you end up paying for. Eat produce that’s in season and you will save you serious money. Plus, it will taste better.
  18. Consider bagged produce. Often you’ll pay the same amount for a few loose potatoes, onions, etc. as you will for a large bag of the same item.
  19. Start your own herb garden. They take up very little space and most of the time you can buy an entire plant for less than you can purchase a few sprigs at the supermarket.
  20. Stock up. When the price of an item is super low with coupons, don’t just purchase enough to last you a week or two. Buying enough household essentials to last you for several months means you won’t have to pay full price when you run out. Many items can be easily stored up to a year before using them.

Tips and Tricks To Save Money On Groceries Reusable shopping bag filled with groceries

  21. Shop only once a week. You can reduce impulse purchases and save gas by planning your shopping list so that you get a week’s worth of groceries in one trip. The less you shop, the more you save.
  22. Look for substitutes. Look at your last grocery receipt and find your most expensive purchases. Consider swapping these items for lower-cost alternatives next time. Some great substitutes are ground turkey for ground beef; bone-in chicken for boneless; Fontina for Gruyere cheese; apples, plums, or peaches for blackberries and raspberries; turmeric for saffron; and dried porcini mushrooms instead of morels. Switching out a few items each trip can add up.
  23. Make sure you’re getting a deal. Be wary of five for $5 sales or any promotion in which a store is offering several items for one price. Check the regular price of the item to make sure it is actually discounted and not just clever signage making you think it’s a steal. Also, compare items by the price per ounce or pound not just the sticker price to be sure you’re getting the best deal.
  24. Get the best price. Find out if you’re actually shopping the store with the lowest overall prices for your needs. Pick the 10 items you most commonly buy at the grocery store like milk, cereal, bananas, chicken, eggs, bread, etc and compare the cost of them at each of the stores in your area (supermarkets, big box stores, dollar store). Balancing Beauty & Bedlam has a spreadsheet that can help you do it.
  25. Buy what you’ll need until the next sale. Stores want to capitalize on the foods and items you’re thinking about at specific times of the year. So just like you’ll get the best deals produce when it’s in season, many food and household items are on sale during special times of the year. Stock up enough to last until the next sale. Holiday foods will be on sale in November and then again near Easter. Many items like boneless chicken, cereal, razors, and feminine products also run through cycles, typically on an eight to twelve-week rotation. If you know you’ll go through a box of cereal a week, buy 10 to 12 boxes when they’re a deal to see you through the weeks when the item will be at full price.

Tips and Tricks To Save Money On Groceries Close up of shopping carts

  26. Pass on the toiletries and milk. These items are usually cheaper at the pharmacy or a big-box store like Walmart and Target.  Milk sold at drugstores and convenience stores typically costs 30 to 50¢ less per gallon.
  27. Use a smaller cart. Studies show that doubling the size of a cart makes people buy 40% more. Also, skip the handheld baskets. A study from the Journal of Marketing Research found that the strain of carrying the basket made us more likely to pick up “vice products” like candy and soda.
  28. Check yourself out. There is less merchandise for you to pick up last minute around self-checkout stands and the wait time is typically shorter. The result, impulse purchases dropped by 32% for women and about 17% for men when shoppers used the self-checkout line instead of a staffed checkout.
  29. Check seafood labels. Products labeled “previously frozen” in small type are often the same thing you can find in the frozen-food aisle for as much as 40% less. Buy frozen and do the thawing yourself. Your fish will be fresher and you won’t have to use it right away.

How to Save For Your Child’s College Fund

January 24, 2018 By Paula 4 Comments

How to Save For Your Child’s College Fund

How to Save For Your Child’s College Fund

While you might be a new parent, it’s never too early to think about college. Columbia insurance agents can most certainly go a long way in securing your financial health, but the same is true of starting to save ASAP for your child’s education. There are a few general tips you can put to good use to better ensure neither you nor your son or daughter are saddled with a crippling financial burden in the form of student debt.

How to Save For Your Child’s College Fund

Start Now

While you’re figuring out your monthly budget with the addition of your newborn, try your best to make room for at least $50 to put towards a college fund. With a seven percent return on investment, that $50 adds up to $20,000 when your child turns 17. If you learn your child decides not to go to college, you can use that money for retirement. Either way, you aren’t wasting time or money.

Look for Additional Ways to Save

Because there’s no telling how much tuition will cost at the school your child chooses, or how much a college education will cost by the time your child graduates from high school, it doesn’t hurt to save more than $50 a month. Because your budget is likely to change over the years as your child grows and your financial situation changes, always be on the lookout for ways to put back more money in your child’s college account. Just because you don’t have extra money to sock away now doesn’t mean you still won’t in the coming years.

How to Save For Your Child’s College Fund Financial Aid

Keep Major Account Balances in Your Name

While it’s okay for your teenage daughter or son to have a savings account in her or his name, you’ll want to make sure that account balance stays under $3,000. Any more than that and your child risks losing out on financial aid for having too much money. Should you encounter this scenario, you’ll want to leave accounts with serious numbers in your name. Your child will thank you later, and you’re sure to thank yourself later as well.

Motivate Your Child

Just because you save up money for college is no guarantee your child will be accepted. For that reason, encourage your child to do the best she or he can in school and apply for any and all scholarships available. Working and doing some saving on their own for something like the cost of college textbooks can make things even easier for everyone.

Apply for SCHOLARSHIPS

Finding scholarships to cover tuition is a viable solution to the covering the high cost of attending college, and they’re an ideal alternative to student loans. Every student should seriously consider winning a scholarship before and during college. The Student Loan Report has a comprehensive guide for college and high school students who are interested in finding scholarships to pay for college. It covers various aspects of scholarships, including different scholarship types, searching for scholarships, writing a scholarship essay, getting a letter of recommendation, and avoiding scholarship scams. You can check out the full guide here: .

Getting a head start on the cost of college is sure to go a long way in saving you a monumental headache in the future. There’s no telling what’s coming down the road ahead, but there are certainly steps you can take to prepare.

Remember, it’s cheaper to save than to borrow. Because every dollar you borrow will cost you $2 by the time you pay the debt. However, if you save, not only are you eliminating those loans but you’re earning interest rather than paying interest.
