Perhaps the World Ends Here
The world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what, we must eat to live.
The gifts of earth are brought and prepared, set on the table. So it has been since creation, and it will go on.
We chase chickens or dogs away from it. Babies teethe at the corners. They scrape their knees under it.
It is here that children are given instructions on what it means to be human. We make men at it, we make women.
At this table we gossip, recall enemies and the ghosts of lovers.
Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms around our children. They laugh with us at our poor falling-down selves and as we put ourselves back together once again at the table.
This table has been a house in the rain, an umbrella in the sun.
Wars have begun and ended at this table. It is a place to hide in the shadow of terror. A place to celebrate the terrible victory.
We have given birth on this table, and have prepared our parents for burial here.
At this table we sing with joy, with sorrow. We pray of suffering and remorse. We give thanks.
Perhaps the world will end at the kitchen table, while we are laughing and crying, eating of the last sweet bite.
Five Turkeys
Five big turkeys sitting on the gate.
The first one said, “It’s getting late.”
The second one said, “Who goes there”?
The third one said, “There are farmers everywhere.”
The fourth one said, “Let’s run, run, run.”
The fifth one said, “It’s just Thanksgiving fun.”
Then Gobble Gobble went the wind.
And out went the lights.
And the five fat turkeys were out of sight.
Thanksgiving Time
When all the leaves are off the boughs,
And nuts and apples gathered in,
And cornstalks waiting for the cows,
And pumpkins safe in barn and bin,
Then Mother says, “My children dear,
The fields are brown, and autumn flies;
Thanksgiving Day is very near,
And we must make Thanksgiving pies!”
Giving Thanks
For the hay and the corn and the wheat that is reaped,
For the labor well done, and the barns that are heaped,
For the sun and the dew and the sweet honeycomb,
For the rose and the song and the harvest brought home –
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!
For the trade and the skill and the wealth in our land,
For the cunning and strength of the workingman’s hand,
For the good that our artists and poets have taught,
For the friendship that hope and affection have brought –
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!
For the homes that with purest affection are blest,
For the season of plenty and well-deserved rest,
For our country extending from sea unto sea;
The land that is known as the “Land of the Free” –
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!
A Thanksgiving Poem for 2019.
The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest is all gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain.
So open wide the doorway-
Thanksgiving comes again!
Even though Thanksgiving isn’t the only time we should give thanks, it does serve as a great reminder to do so. This Thanksgiving sit back, enjoy the food, talk to family, and think about everything we should be thankful for.
I had to pin these! I know I have heard one of them, but I couldn’t repeat it, because of my memory. Thanksgiving, just like Christmas, is not about a turkey or a white bearded jolly Ol’ man! These are all about what we should be doing every day – Thanking God for everything! His birth was especially important, because He ends up sacrificing Himself for us unworthy sinners!! We have a silly tradition on Thanksgiving. Right after we pray, I sing a silly song:
A turkey sat on a backyard fence and
he sang this sad, sad tune;
Thanksgiving Day is coming
Gobble Gobble, Gobble, Gobble,
and I might be eaten soon!
Gobble Gobble, Gobble, Gobble Gobble, Gobble
I think I’ll run away!
Gobble Gobble, Gobble, Gobble Gobble, Gobble
OH! I hate Thanksgiving Day! 🦃
Crazy huh? Then we dig into the turkey meal 🥘
I love it! What a cute song! Many people think I’m crazy because my favorite holiday is Christmas EVE. I just love dinner with my family and midnight mass so much more than all the gift-giving on Christmas day.
These are very cute and clever. I hope everyone has a great holiday. And remember to give thanks also to the First Nations People of our country!
These are really nice Thanksgiving poems! Thank you so much for sharing, I am going to share them with my kids. 🙂
These are great. I really like Thanksgiving and bringing praise to our Lord and Savior for all we are blessed with each day. Thank you so much for sharing this. God Bless
I like that poem. But, alas, food always finds my thighs!
I love this poem thanks for sharing it.
Thank you for sharing. Very cute poem
I’ll have to recite this to my family this afternoon. I am not with them today, but I will FaceTime them!
