How to Host the Perfect Cookie Swap

Want to host a Cookie Swap? Hosting the perfect cookie swap doesn’t have to mean adding to the stress of your already-overwhelming holiday to-do list. Here’s how to do it! Invite a group of your most passionate baking friends, family, and coworkers. Have each person make enough of one kind of cookie to share and swap. Experienced cookie swap hosts generally cap their guest list at around eight to ten people. This allows everyone to enjoy a satisfying variety of treats at the party and to take home at the end of the party.

How many cookies to bring? Most cookie swaps ask that guests bring one dozen cookies for each person at the party, but scaling down would be fine, too. You will need holiday treat bags, inexpensive tins, or pretty paper sleeves, and ribbons or bows to a seasonal touch to your party and to send your guests cookies home in. On the day of the party, set up tables to display everyone’s’ goodies. Include place cards with the name of each treat and the baker who brought it (you can print these in advance or leave them blank for guests to fill out as they arrive).

Offer some favorite winter beverages and a selection of light bites to balance out the sweet cookies. You can also offer a few low-key activities at the cookie exchange party. Set up a station with plain sugar cookies and provide icing and embellishments for your friends to DIY their own decorated goodies, or create a craft station where guests can create seasonal keepsakes, like festive ornaments.

At the party, sample the treats, trade and package them in appealing assortments, and enjoy each other’s company. Everyone leaves with finished gifts, wonderful memories, and plenty of new recipes.
