During the Middle Ages, northern Christian kingdoms had to secure their borders against their Muslim southern neighbors. For defensive purposes, castles were built in Spain, but during the Reconquista they were used as noble residences and fief-keeps. Since enemy invasions were still common, they kept their military purposes well into the 15th century when the Catholic monarchs ordered all the castles in their realms to be handed over to the Crown.
If you would like to experience the place where a knight or lord would entertain his peers, you can visit Spain to see one of the more than 2500 castles. But if a trip overseas is not in your budget you can visit one of the 11th-century style castles at Medieval Times where you can spend the evening dining with Nobles and enjoying the entertainment offered to their guests.
Over the Christmas holiday, we had the pleasure of visiting the castle in Myrtle Beach with our eleven-year-old grandchildren. As you walk up to the castle doors, you are transported back in time. There are Kings, Princesses, Knights all in period costumes When you leave the Hall of Arms and enter the Grand Ceremonial Arena you truly fell like you are right there in the forgotten age of the 11th century where devotion, courage, and love were the measure of a both man and woman.
Once in the Grand Ceremonial Arena, we were treated to a four-course meal and a two-hour show. Our serf drew us into the show and encouraged us to route for our knight as well as boo for the opponents. As he tended to our every need, we dined on baby dragons, dragon eggs, even sipping some of their blood as we enjoyed some tomato bisque.
While we ate, we were treated a show with some of the most beautiful horses and displays of horsemanship. When the games began, and the splinters and sparks began to fly it was easy to be lost in the moment. We waved our banners and cheered for our Red and Yellow Knight! I thought that my granddaughter would faint when he rode over to us and handed her a flower. He was her knight in shining armor, and she couldn’t wait to meet him after the show when they received their guests in the Hall of Arms. It was a night that our family will remember fondly for years to come.
